At this week’s school board meeting, a wave of community pride and passion filled the room — quite literally — as standing-room-only attendance highlighted the outpouring of support for the district’s storied gymnastics program. The overwhelming presence of students, parents, former coaches, and community members demonstrated just how deeply rooted this program is in the fabric of the Lakeland community.

Multiple students spoke with remarkable poise and sincerity, sharing what gymnastics has meant to them personally and academically. Parents and alumni echoed their sentiments, underscoring the value of the program not only as an athletic pursuit but as a cornerstone of discipline, confidence, and teamwork. Former coaches and dedicated community members reflected on the rich tradition and legacy of the program — a legacy many districts across the state have sadly lost.

The advocacy on display was nothing short of inspiring. Each speaker presented their perspective with respect and heartfelt emotion, embodying the very best of what it means to be part of the Lakeland family. Their collective efforts reinforced our commitment to being a Destination Corporation — a place where students are supported, programs are celebrated, and traditions are preserved.

The board is proud of the progress made this week toward preserving the gymnastics program and is actively seeking a qualified coach to carry the torch forward. We recognize the momentum and passion behind this program and remain committed to ensuring its continued growth and success for generations of future Laker gymnasts.

“This week’s meeting was a powerful reminder of what can happen when a community comes together,” said Katie Levitz, Public Relations & Marketing Specialist.  “We saw firsthand the strength of our gymnastics community and the value this program brings to our students and district.”

As we move forward, we encourage anyone with the qualifications and passion to lead this incredible program to consider joining our team. Together, we will keep the tradition alive — and the Laker spirit thriving.
