"We had an extra exciting time on Monday with our Learning Cafe Day, where students were busy serving up creativity, critical thinking, and lots of laughs!
Our day kicked off with students designing their very own uniform hats—a must-have for any top-tier cafe staff! Next up, they tackled some menu math, solving story problems with a tasty cafe twist.
Then came the real fun: students invented their own cafe-style drinks and crafted original tall tales to explain how their wild and wacky creations came to life! Their stories were full of fabulous exaggerations—from picking 3,000 blueberries in the woods, to throwing a football into outer space, to squeezing enough lemons to fill an ocean of lemonade!
To bring their drinks to life, students followed a directed drawing activity and added their own unique artistic touches—fruit, toppings, vibrant colors—you name it!
After that, the students participated in a Cafe Book Tasting, where they explored books and identified genres, as well as the traits that can be found in each. We focused on tall tales and fairy tales, tying into our knowledge unit from these first few weeks of school.
And of course, no cafe experience is complete without some sweet treats! We enjoyed blueberry muffins, chocolate chip cookies, and drinks inspired by our legendary heroes:
Blue Ox Blast (Paul Bunyan)
Choo Choo Chiller (Casey Jones)
Wild West Sunset Lemonade (Pecos Bill)
Steel-Drivin’ Chocolate Shake (John Henry)
It was a fantastic day full of learning, laughter, and a whole lot of imagination. I wouldn’t be surprised if we had a few future authors—or baristas—in the making!" - Kaylee Avery
