Lakeland Primary is proud to highlight its innovative “Walk to Read” program, designed to meet students where they are in their reading journey. Held first thing every morning, this program provides instruction tailored to each student’s current reading level, focusing on foundational skills and phonics.
At the start of the school year, every student completes a concept assessment to determine their instructional needs. Based on these results, first- and second-graders switch classrooms according to concept test results, while kindergarten students remain with their primary teacher. Special education students benefit from a co-teaching model, ensuring targeted support, while high-ability students focus on areas where they need more confidence and also have opportunities to extend their learning beyond grade-level expectations.
Kim Kabrich, Principal of Lakeland Primary, emphasized the positive impact of the program:
"Instead of becoming frustrated trying to force a child to do something they are not ready for, meet children where they are and not where you want them to be." She added that this approach has resulted in noticeable growth, reduced frustration, and fewer behavioral issues among students.
“Walk to Read” is part of Lakeland Primary’s ongoing commitment to fostering strong literacy skills through individualized instruction, helping every student build confidence and achieve success in reading.
