National Honor Society 2026 Induction

Lakeland Jr/Sr High School proudly celebrated the intersection of academic excellence and character this week during its annual National Honor Society (NHS) Induction Ceremony. The evening served a dual purpose: welcoming 20 new members into the prestigious organization and honoring 18 graduating seniors as they received their ceremonial cords.

The ceremony, held in the school auditorium, highlighted the four pillars of the National Honor Society: Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character. A highlight of the evening was a keynote address by Mrs. Leer, a beloved math teacher at Lakeland Jr/Sr High. Known for her logic-driven classroom, Mrs. Leer offered the audience a refreshing and candid perspective on the world outside of textbooks. She shared that while she teaches mathematics because of its absolute practicality and predictable solutions, she reminded the inductees that life rarely follows a formula. Mrs. Leer challenged the students to embrace the "variables" of the human experience, noting that while math always has a right answer, life requires the grace to navigate moments that don't always add up.

The event transitioned from the philosophical to the ceremonial as the chapter recognized its most senior leaders.

  • Senior Cord Presentation: Graduating seniors were presented with their gold NHS cords, which they will wear during the commencement ceremony to signify their sustained commitment to academic rigor and community service.

  • New Member Induction: 20 students were officially inducted, reciting the NHS pledge and lighting candles to represent the eternal light of knowledge and integrity.

"These students represent the very best of Lakeland," said the NHS Chapter Advisor and Lakeland Teacher, Amber Jerdon. "Whether they are solving complex equations in Mrs. Leer’s class or volunteering in our local community, they prove that they have the heart and the discipline to lead us into the future."

The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to recognize those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character.
