What Lakers need to know about the new Indiana Personal Device Law

As we get ready to kick off another exciting school year, we'd like to share an important update about a new Indiana law that takes effect for the 2026-2027 school year.

Beginning this school year, Lakeland School Corporation will implement a Bell-to-Bell Personal Device Policy in accordance with Indiana law. During the school day—from the first bell until dismissal—students must keep all personal wireless devices powered off and kept in lockers.

Our goal is to create a learning environment where every student can stay focused and engaged, experience fewer distractions and interruptions, and build stronger academic success and positive social connections. 

The policy applies to all personal electronic devices, including:
• Cell phones
• Smartwatches
• Earbuds and headphones
• Tablets and personal laptops
• Gaming devices
• Any other personal device capable of communication or internet access

One important change families should be aware of is that personal devices may not be used during lunch, passing periods, or study hall. This policy applies only to students' personal devices. School-issued technology will continue to be available and used as directed by teachers for instructional purposes.

If you need to reach your child during the school day, please contact your school's main office, and we will make sure your message is delivered. Likewise, if your child needs to contact you, they may do so through the school office.
